Poland
Poland’s second oldest city has a long history of coming in second, but has distinguished itself as the pipe capital.
Dating back to the 8th century, Przemyśl is Poland’ second oldest city, after Krakow. The city’s strategic location near the border of what is now the Ukraine brought a series of highs and lows over its long history, flourishing during the Renaissance, and suffering greatly during both World Wars. A huge number of fortresses were built around the city in the 19th century, which resulted in a World War I siege which caused an estimated 300,000 casualties. During World War II, nearly 30% of the city’s population was Jewish, almost all of whom were rounded up in a ghetto before being sent to extermination camps. Today, the ruins of the fortifications and repurposed synagogues are reminders of the city’s most trying days. However, the scenic old town, charming museum of Bells and Pipes, and National Museum, which holds Poland’s second largest collection of icons, offer visitors a memorable experience.
