With evidence of a Stone Age settlement, Ptuj was first recorded as a Celtic stronghold that was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC. The town has such a rich history, that it's illegal to dig deeper than a meter, less an artefact be destroyed. Today, the city is a is a charming throwback to the past, overlooked by its 18th century castle.
