With evidence of a Stone Age settlement, Ptuj was first recorded as a Celtic stronghold that was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC. The town has such a rich history, that it's illegal to dig deeper than a meter, less an artefact be destroyed. Today, the city is a is a charming throwback to the past, overlooked by its 18th century castle. Here, visitors will find the largest collection of musical instruments in the country, as well as stupendous views of the town below. Wandering the city streets brings visitors past beautiful landmarks, including a Roman tombstone from the 2nd century, or the Art Nouveau Town Hall.
