Pucara

Watched over by an ancient archaeological site, this quiet city is famous throughout the Andes for its “lucky bulls”.

About

In 1,800 BC Pucara was the first urban center in the region, and the settlement thrived until around 200 AD. Despite its historical importance and proximity to Cuzco, the large archaeological site has seen little restoration, but the terraced pyramid Kalasaya, temple, and sunken court proudly represent Pucara’s significance. Stonework, ceramics, and other artefacts found at the site are on display at the Museo Lítico Pucará, giving a more detailed look at this ancient culture. Outside the archaeological site, Pucara is known throughout the Andes for its ceramics, particularly the colorful bulls that are said to bring luck and prosperity, and many of the local ceramics workshops are open to the public.
