Chile
Learn about the early industry that supported Southern Patagonia in this lovingly preserved processing plant.
Built by the Sociedad Explotadora de Tierra del Fuego in the early 20th century, the Puerto Bories Cold Storage Plant played a key role in supporting the economy of southernmost Argentina and Chile. The frigorífico (meat freezer) here processed wool and lamb for export up through the 1990s. After being left to the elements for nearly a decade, a luxury hotel purchased the property and this piece of post-Victorian industrial history was restored by the descendants of some of the area’s original settlers. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a guest to walk through this historic building and inspect what was once cutting-edge European engineering. Making your visit even more informative, part of the Museo Historico e Industrial Puerto Bories is also dedicated to the region’s indigenous inhabitants. Photo by Thesingularhotels under CC BY-SA 3.0
