Get your fill of German culture at this enchanting lakeside town renowned for its traditional cakes.
Puerto Varas was founded by German immigrants on the shores of Lake Llanquihue in the 19th century. Unsurprisingly, Puerto Varas has become a destination for both its beautiful surroundings and its German heritage. Start your visit at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, which was modeled after the Marienkirche Church in Germany’s Black Forest. From here, head down to the waterfront for the sweeping views of the lake and twin volcanoes beyond. Follow the waterfront walk south to the Museo Pablo Fierro to see works by the artist, as well as historic artifacts from the region, or head north to the La Puntilla mirador for the best views in town. If you have a sweet tooth, Puerto Varas is famous for its traditional German cakes, and even has a Kuchen Day celebration on the first Saturday of February. You also have plenty of options for other German snacks in the many shops, restaurants and cafes.
