Uruguay
This beach-lover's paradise is one of the best places to visit in Uruguay to enjoy a slower pace of life.
This small Uruguayan village is known specifically for the white sand beaches which (during the high season) are lined with open bars and are very popular for surfing. Dune boarding is also quite a popular alternative to surfing, an activity which is similar to snowboarding but done on the sand dunes. At Los Botes (Fisherman’s Beach) visitors have been known to join the locals around beach fires playing guitars and singing songs. While on the beach in the summer months, it is very common to see whales along Uruguay’s shore! You can also easily make friends in Punta del Diablo, as both stray and owned dogs, who love people, freely roam the town in search of camaraderie. If you are in town early enough, you can witness the beautifully colorful sunrises which will surely start your day off right. Nearby is also the Santa Teresa fort, which can be a perfect alternative to the beach. This Portuguese fortress dates back to 1762, and was captured by the Spanish in 1793 after many hard fought battles.
