Enjoy spectacular sea views and vibrant decor at the largest and highest temple in town.
While the Puu Jih Shih Temple may not be the oldest temple in town, this extravagant complex is the highest in Sandakan, meaning it’s closest to heaven for Buddhists, and has unparalleled views of Sandakan Bay for every visitor. The temple interior is a vibrant mix of red, gold, and blue with gilt Buddha statues, and pillars covered in traditional golden dragons. The towers of small gold Buddhas give thanks to the temple’s donors with their Chinese names - three characters are individuals, and five represent a family name. If you visit during the late afternoon, you might see monks or nuns making their way through the terraced gardens, chanting, chiming, and drumming as they pass the large topiary swastika.
