Ukraine
The world’s only museum dedicated to Ukrainian Easter eggs gives a fascinating look at this intricate folk art tradition.
The Pysanka Easter Egg Museum preserves the Ukraine’s tradition of elaborately ornamented Easter eggs. The origins of which date back to antiquity and ancient creation myths that perceived the egg as the source of life, and the universe. Unlike the American tradition of dying eggs, ‘pysanka’ are made using wax to create astoundingly intricate patterns on the egg. In a brightly painted, egg-shaped building, visitors will find over 10,000 pysanka, some of which date back to the 19th century. The decorations on the eggs range from amazingly intricate geometric designs to finely-detailed palaces. Please note: the museum is closed on Mondays.
