Qalhat

Qalhat, Oman’s first capital, was a bustling medieval city that served as a major port on the Indian Ocean trade network. When Marco Polo visited in the 13th century, he commented on its fine bazaars and beautiful mosque. Spanning 60 hectares, the city was entirely encircled by a fortified wall, though this didn’t save it from being sacked and burned by the Portuguese in 1507. Today only one building remains standing. This, however, is a royal mausoleum, built in the 13th century by King Baha al-Din Ayaz for his wife, Bibi Maryam, or perhaps, the other way around. Surrounding this are the foundations of the medieval city, which offer a look into the past - and panoramic views of the sea.
