Jordan
It’s said the Israelites crossed the Jordan River here, right across across from where Jesus was baptized.
According to tradition, Qasr el Yahud is the very spot where the Israelites, led by Joshua, entered the Promised Land after 40 years in the desert. About 300 years later, the Prophet Elijah headed the opposite direction to ascend into heaven, and several centuries after that, Jesus was baptized here. While the Jordanian side received UNESCO recognition for its significance to Christianity, the holy waters on the west bank have also been a site of pilgrimage for centuries, with many coming to be baptized just a stone’s throw from where Jesus was.
