Devastated during the Vietnam War, the remains of this 19th century citadel now serve as a memorial to the many who died here.
Quang Tri is a small provincial town that gained notoriety during the Vietnam War. Strategically important thanks to its 19th century, Vauban-esque citadel, the town was the only major South Vietnamese city to be taken by the North. A counteroffensive saw the US carpet bomb the town and fortress, which, coupled with heavy shelling and fierce doo-to-door fighting caused the deaths of around 10,000. It’s still possible to see the moat, ramparts, and gate, the crumbling brick remains of other parts of the fortress, and visit the on-site museum to learn more about the intense battle, and why the site is such a source of pride for the Vietnamese.
