Namibia
A geological quirk has created one of the only known instances of quiver trees growing in close proximity.
Quiver trees grow almost exclusively atop dolerite rock formation, meaning they’re usually large distances apart. However, a patch of particularly rocky land near Keetmanshoop has allowed an entire Quiver Tree Forest to grow. The trees themselves are likewise an oddity - technically a species of aloe that can grow over 30 feet tall and live for centuries. The national symbol of Namibia, the trees are so named because the Pas bushmen used their round branches as quivers for their arrows. The unusual formation of trees has created a unique ecosystem, attracting a variety of insects, birds, and mammals, especially when the trees are in bloom. Throughout the year, you’re also likely to see or hear the colon of fluffy little rock hyrax that have taken up residence in the rocks. A few kilometers away, you’ll find the Giant’s Playground - an unusual series of rock formations that look like they were stacked by a baby giant.
