Randers

This medieval market town is home to the largest artificial rainforest in Northern Europe.

About

Formerly a trade port, accessible from the sea via the Gudenå River, Randers is still blessed with many 15th century half-timber houses from the time it first flourished, as well as the impressive red-brick Romanesque St Martin's Church dated from the same time. The historical culture Museum Østjylland is Denmark’s oldest, and tells the stories of the inhabitants of this area over the past 100,000 years, and the interactive medieval exhibition is great for the kids. Right next door is the Randers Kunstmuseum, containing over 200 years of artwork from some of Denmark’s most prominent figures. Randers Regnskov is the top attraction in the city, with it’s huge indoor rainforest. Here monkeys roam free amongst the 350 types of plants, as well as 250 other species of animals. The domes are divided into South American, Asian, and African section. There is even a Jaguar Garden!
