Peru
One of the last sites erected by the Inka Empire, this now-ruined temple was their largest single-roofed structure.
The Raqch'i Temple was part of the primary control point on a road system that expanded out from Cusco as the Inka empire grew in the 15th century. Raqch'i was home to a number of sacred sites, store houses, living quarters, and an artificial lake, most of which were enclosed by a 4-km-long perimeter wall. But the most prominent structure is the main temple, also known as the Temple of Wiracocha. At 92 meters by 25.5 meters, the two-story building would have had the largest roof in the entire Inka empire, and it’s the only Inka building that has an account on how people should walk through it. While the Spanish destroyed much of the site, the temple’s impressive outer still give a good impression of the Inka’s might - especially if you join a guided tour to dig deeper into the details.
