Discover the fascinating history of this mighty medieval castle.
Built in stages between the 14th and 16th centuries, Raseborg Castle has a fascinating history of battles fought between Swedish and Danish forces over its control, as well as pirates who coveted the castle's strategic location by the sea, though changing sea levels have since left it landlocked. The castle itself is shaped like the letter 'D', with a rounded, thick-walled donjon in one corner and a straight keep in the other. Outside this sanctum, you can still see the remains of a defensive wall and a square tower and barbican. Explore the chambers and corridors on your own, or join a guided tour to delve deeper into the castle's history. Throughout the year, there are also special events, ranging from Midsummer celebrations, to ancient markets, medieval events, high-class concerts and theatrical performances. There is a restaurant and museum on-site, where you can sate your appetite for food and history.
