Said to be the birthplace of Halloween, this Tentative UNESCO Site is the oldest and largest unexcavated Royal Site in Europe.
So far, 240 archaeological sites have been found at the Rathcroghan Royal Site, dating from around 3500BC through the early Middle Ages. The legendary Queen Medb ruled all of Connacht from here, and inspired the great epic tale Táin Bó Cuailnge. The enigmatic Rathcroghan Mound marks the site of her stronghold - a fortification that predates the Pyramids. As part of the guided tour of the site, visitors crawl into the age of mythology in the Cave of the Cat, which is said to have been the entrance to the Otherworld by fearful Christians, and the origin of Halloween. The medieval entrance is quite small, so it’s not recommended for people with mobility issues. The Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, located in the medieval village of Tulsk, details how Iron Age and Medieval inhabitants dressed, ate, and lived through interpretive exhibits and a museum displaying artefacts found at the site. If you’d like a guided tour, you should extend your stop time to 2.5 hours, and it’s recommended to book in advance. For more information, please visit www.rathcroghan.ie
