Ravenna

Ravenna has one of the most impressive collections of Christian mosaic artwork, deemed of the utmost importance once Ravenna joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996.

About

Once serving as the capital of the Western Roman Empire, Ravenna has long been a special place for its proximity to the Adriatic and its collection of art. As a capital for several kingdoms, the city kept many of its gems well preserved over the centuries. The intricate designs and lavish features in many of the mosaics have won the heart of many. A major point of interest is the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, a Roman building filled with mosaics praised by UNESCO experts as the most “artistically perfect”. Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and many monuments in Ravenna have been deemed unique and timeless. So much so, in fact, that Ravenna has 8 sites featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Although Ravenna is an inland city, it is connected to the Adriatic by the Candiano Canal which has much beauty to offer. The coast of Ravenna has 9 seaside resorts, giving you a perfect place to rest after exploring this ancient city of art.
