Latvia
This riverside city went from a sleepy medieval village to major cultural center.
Rēzekne can trace its roots back to a 9th century wooden fortress, though the town itself didn’t appear until the 13th century. Rēzekne remained a small town until the 19th century when 2 railroad stations were built, after which it quickly developed into an important industrial and cultural center. Today, the city is home to a multitude of museums and creative centers, such as the Embassy of Latgale ‘GORS’ - one of the best theatres in the Baltics, where visitors can also simply enjoy the atmosphere at the on-site restaurant. At the ‘ZEIMUĻS’ Centre of Creative Services of Eastern Latvia, children can join a fun cultural class, while adults can admire the beautiful eco-architecture. For visitors looking to delve even deeper into local culture, the Latgale Culture and History Museum has preserved local arts and crafts, and hosts special events and hands-on workshops.
