In the eastern reaches of São Miguel, a natural waterfall is tucked away into towering mountains, volcanic rock formations and exotic flora and fauna.
The Ribeira Quente waterfall, located in the small town of the same name, cascades from steeply sloping mountains that surround the locality in a display of sheer natural wonder. Dropping from a height of approximately 10 meters into a crystal clear pool, the waterfall is located in a small gorge that’s been excavated by its waters over the centuries. Surrounding the area is exuberant vegetation, characteristic of the sprawling Laurissilva forest of Azores. Thermal springs on the island give the water a unique chemical composition, and the falls are surrounded by volcanic rock formations that provide a natural barrier and tranquil environment. Located a short walk from a parking area, this stop is an excellent opportunity for photos and to breathe in the air of São Miguel.
