Romania
Famous for its white houses with green windows, this little rural village is a breath of fresh air.
Settled since Roman times, the abundance of iron ore in the area helped the town grow from a humble medieval village to burgeoning mining town by the 18th century. As the ore was depleted, the town began to decline, and was all but destroyed by fire in the 19th century. The local minors rebuilt their hometown, adhering to the traditional Transylvanian architecture, but with an Austro-Hungarian twist thanks to the large population that’s been living here since the 18th century. Even today, the town is predominantly Hungarian. In fact, it is so well preserved that it became the first rural town to receive the Europa Nostra award and has been suggested as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since so little has changed in the village since the 19th century, visitors have the opportunity to walk through a living time capsule, enjoying the fresh air, and views of the surrounding soaring peaks.
