Puerto Rico
Follow one of the largest underground rivers in the world into this massive cave system.
Carved out by the Rio Camuy, the third largest underground river in the world, the Rio Camuy Caves are undoubtedly one of Puerto Rico’s finest natural spectacles. To date, over 10 miles of caverns, 220 caves and 17 entrances have been mapped, and many experts believe there are still another 800 caves in the system waiting to be found. On a guided tour, you’ll be led through an unforgettable fraction of the complex. Passing through tunnels up to 170 feet high and 200 feet wide, you’ll find cave ornaments that have developed over the course of millions of years, including the largest stalagmite in Puerto Rico, all while surrounded by the flutter of bats and rush of the river below. Perhaps the highlight though is the Sumidero de Empalme (Empalme Sinkhole), where the sun shines through an opening in the cave 450 feet above. Please note: the cave is currently only accessible on foot (about a 1 hour hike) and closed-toe shoes are required. Tickets for the tour are not included in the stop price and cost $20 per person.
