Riwaka Resurgence

Discover the sacred waters of the Crystal Pool’s in Kahurangi National Park’s marble mountains.

About

Nestled in the Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand’s second largest national park the Riwaka Resurgence pours into the caves at the base of the Takaka Hill. Erosion caused by rainfall has carved a network of caves into the marble stone mountains, that act as a drainage system spilling ice-cold water into many small pools along the walkway to the resurgence. With many picnic spots, this is a relaxing, scenic hideaway where you can be at one with nature among the cool and refreshing bush. It’s possible to view the resurgence from the accessible viewing platform on the first half of the walk, and for those wanting to descend into the crystal-clear, bright turquoise waters there is a steep stairway down to the waters’ edge. According to tradition, Māori people considered the crystal pool to have powerful healing properties!
