Ancient petroglyphs line stretches of granite outcrops near the town of Tanumshede at this incredible site of prehistoric interest.
Created during the Bronze Age around 4,000 years ago, the Rock Carvings in Tanum are one of the most important examples of prehistoric rock art in Europe and have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Between 1800 and 500 BCE, the Bronze Age people of the area carved humans, animals, boats and abstract patterns into the smooth surface of granite outcrops and are believed to have been used for ceremonial or ritual purposes. Many glyphs depict the Hjortspring boat carrying passengers, reflecting the sea-faring savviness of the Scandinavian people of the time. A viewing platform allows you to look out over the plain, which was once covered by sea and has since risen above ground over thousands of years. Visit Skräddö, a resting stop with a fascinating exhibition that divulges the secrets and stories of the alluring petroglyphs. The Rock Carvings in Tanum are open daily.
