Denmark
This viking city’s UNESCO-listed cathedral has been the burial place of the Danish monarchy for centuries, but it’s best known for its massive music festival.
Roskilde was founded by Harald Bluetooth in the 980s, and developed into a major trade hub that served as the country’s capital from the 11th century until 1443. The city’s UNESCO-listed Gothic cathedral was the very first building in the “Brick Gothic” style, and is even more culturally significant as it houses the tombs of generations of Danish monarchs, as well as important Vikings including Harold Bluetooth and Sweyn Forkbeard. Next to the cathedral is the Baroque Roskilde Palace, which served as the bishop’s residence, and now houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. The city’s Viking heritage is proudly displayed at the Viking Ship Museum, which exhibits the well-preserved remains of five 11th-century ships, as well as fully functional recreations. Despite its historic importance, Roskilde is best known for hosting one of the largest music festivals in Europe, which inspired the excellent Ragnarock Museum where rock and pop history have been transformed into interactive exhibits.
