Oman
Once the capital of Oman, this historic town is still watched over by two of the country's finest fortifications.
Settled since pre-Islam times, Rustaq briefly served as Oman’s capital in the 17th century. Today the town remains an important regional center watched over by one of Oman’s largest and most impressive forts. First built in the 13th century, the Rustaq Fort offers amazing views of the surrounding area, and some interesting artefacts in its museum. The other famous historical landmark is the 18th century Al Hazm Castle, which is an outstanding example of the intricate Omani Islamic architecture of the time. At the heart of town, you’ll find a verdant green hotspring, which feeds into private baths where you can relax your feet. Bait al Garbi, a 200-year-old house, has been restored and repurposed into a museum exhibition historical heirlooms ranging from books, swords, and ancient coins to the family’s collection of perfumes, bags, and trinkets.
