Rwanda
This district in the Eastern Province of Rwanda is home to an amalgam of agriculture, livestock farming and tourist attractions, including the impressive Rwamagana Parish Church.
Rwamagana is the capital of the Rwamagana District and means “place of a hundred things”, with an abundance of popular attractions. In the city itself, a main market, secondary school and conference center make up the urban expanse. The drawcard of the city is its Parish Church, a grand piece of artwork that stands proudly in red-bricked neo-classical style. Established in 1919, the church was designed and built by Dutch-born Peter Johannes Josephus van Heeswijk who was spreading Catholicism through the African Mission. The whole structure consists of one main building and a bell tower, and is a striking scene against the blue skies and dusty cobblestoned promenade. The church has been active over the last 100 years and has introduced many initiatives such as the support of needy students at schools and work with the charity Caritas.
