Rwanda
In the heart of the capital city, marvel at Rwanda’s traditional and contemporary artwork in a historically significant building.
Established in 2018, the Rwanda Art Museum is Rwanda’s only contemporary art museum and contains an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and mixed media installations. It is housed in the beautifully designed home of former Rwandan presidents Juvenal Habyarimana, who lived there until 1994, and Pasteur Bizimungu, who lived there until 2000. Flight debris from the presidential jet that went down and killed Habyarimana remains in the garden as a heritage site. The idea to transform the building into a museum of rich artistic heritage came from suggestions left by visitors and local visual artists, and the Museum now also hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops and events to engage and educate the public. It’s a thrumming vein of the vibrant cultural scene in Rwanda and draws artists, curators, scholars and tourists alike together.
