Sadok Kok Thom

This relatively small temple is also one of Thailand’s most archaeologically important as an engraving found here revealed precious information about the Khmer empire.

About

The Sadok Kok Thom temple complex was built by the mighty Khmer Empire in the 11th century. Dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva, the temple was used by Buddhists as Thai faith shifted away from Hinduism. Surrounded by moats and an outer wall, a long processional path leads to the inner sanctuary with its central tower, thought to have contained the sacred linga- the symbol of the Hindu God Shiva. There are also two libraries near the tower where the ancient scriptures were kept. Around the temple you’ll find intricate carvings of mythical Nagas, and other religious imagery, including a reclining Vishnu.
