Saint Arnaud

Remote and yet still very accessible, this is a quiet slice of mountainous South Island heaven.

About

St Arnaud, nestled on the northern tip of Lake Rotoiti, is well regarded as being the perfect village for exploring the Nelson Lakes National Park. The vista from the pebble beach is truly spectacular - you’ll get fewer better photos from the ground on a clear, sunny day. There are a whole host of walking opportunities to be had, from 15 minute strolls around Kerr Bay to 3 day hikes into the mountains. Or you could just chill by the lake. It never gets too busy here, unlike many other comparable places on South Island, despite the obvious beauty of the surroundings. Search the local woods for the elusive and rare Rifleman bird, New Zealand’s smallest avian, or take a boat trip up the lake. You can even fish for brown trout, a popular pastime in these parts as the lakes and rivers are well stocked.
