Convention gets thrown out the stained-glass window in this unusual art-covered house of worship.
In 1987, Father Friedrich Zeck contacted the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 1987, to revamp the Church of Santa Barbara and its grounds. Given free reign, Hundertwasser covered the exterior of the church with strange symbols and imagery such as a heart pierced by spears and great green circles on the roof. In the church grounds, Hundertwasser built 12 gates, representing each of the world’s religions. The church’s steeple was transformed into a clock tower, with atypical timepieces affixed to each face. The interior is also filled with unusual art, though toned down so as to not distract from the church’s primary purpose as a house of worship.
