Salaspils Memorial Ensemble

Brutalist architecture commemorates the brutal treatment of the victims of the Nazi labour camp that once stood here.

About

Between 1941 and 1945 a forced labour camp was used by the Nazis to imprison over 20,000 people, leading to over 2,000 deaths from the camp’s inhumane conditions. In 1967, the Salaspils Memorial Ensemble was opened on the site of the camp to remember the victims of Nazism. One of the largest monument complexes in Europe, a 100 meter long concrete wall symbolises the border between life and death, while 7 monumental sculptures represent the victims and the memorial’s ideals.
