While Salem is synonymous with its infamous witch trials, it's also a historic town dripping with charm.
After being settled by Europeans in 1626, Salem quickly became one of early America's most important seaports. But its isolation from the established European towns and cities in the early years made it a hotbed for hysteria. This culminated in infamous witch trials that saw hundreds accused, and 20 executed. Fortunately, things have settled down since then, though the witch remains the town mascot. Today, you can visit the memorial to the victims of the Witch Trials, as well as the Witch House, the only structure in Salem with direct ties to the trials. The rest of the town is decidedly quaint, with some excellent historical offerings. Visit the Pickman House, built in 1664 that also has the Burying Point Cemetery, the second oldest cemetery in America. And the Salem Maritime National Historic Site along the waterfront consists of 12 buildings and a replica tall-ship that interpret American maritime history from colonization through independence.
