In the heart of Colombia’s Coffee Triangle lies Salento, a quaint mountain town with a lively arts scene and welcoming locals. Salento’s location has influenced its architecture and culture since Colonial times. Simón Bolívar famously ordered the main road be upgraded after seeing it in poor condition and knowing its strategic importance to the country. Today, visitors to Salento can marvel at the colorful colonial buildings virtually untouched by time along Calle Real, or Royal Road, just off the main plaza. Pop into any restaurant to grab some fresh trout - the region’s favorite dish - or swing by a cafe to grab a cup of strong coffee. Afterwards, play a game of Tejo with the locals. Should you fancy unplugging and immersing yourself in nature for the day, just east of town is the beautiful Cocora Valley with its towering wax palms sprouting from the rolling hills.
