Discover a host of marine life at one of the largest aquariums for freshwater fish in Japan with an underwater view of salmon in the river.
Situated on the Chitose River is the Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium, one of the largest freshwater fish aquariums in Japan. Walking inside you will find three large tanks displaying an array of freshwater fish, the highlight being a colossal 16 ft (5 meter) deep tank that holds 300 tons of water! Other smaller tanks display a range of aquatic life, including salmon species, axolotl, and striking polka dot stingrays! The observation zone is a particular highlight, where windows look directly out to the fascinating underwater world of the Chitose River, where you can view salmon and trout swimming in their natural habitat. Outside the aquarium find an Indian Water Wheel where salmon are carefully collected. The aquarium is open daily between 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM and is closed between December 29th - January 1st. Entrance fees are not included in our price and must be purchased separately at the site entrance.
