San Bartolomé was founded by the Spanish in 1536, who plundered the area for the gold in the rivers and mountains. After their departure, the town fell into relative obscurity, though the stunning church still stands as a reminder to its historical wealth. While the town is unknown to most foreign tourists, it’s famous across the country and certain international circles for its guitars. Guitar fountains dot the town, and luthiers line the streets, with some makers continuing a family tradition that goes back generations. While no one knows exactly why this town became enamored with guitars 200 years ago, visiting the workshops and hearing their passion for their craft is an amazing experience even if you’re not in the market for an acoustic work of art.
