This temperate, fertile oasis enveloped by rocky mountains is the perfect balance of rural and urban. Its colonial history can be traced back to 1562, but due to a devastating earthquake, most of that aspect of its heritage has been erased. Nowadays, the town has a modern layout, with wide streets irrigated by canals and widespread vegetation. Tourism is centered around wine production and degustation, with the region of San Juan being ranked as the second most important wine producing region in Argentina. Take a stroll through the flora at 25 de Mayo Square and take in the picturesque surroundings and monuments- including one of the former president who called this city home, Domingo Sarmiento. This prominent politician’s birthplace, the Sarmiento House, is located a short way away. You can wander through the house where Sarmiento was born and raised, and travel back in time through reading newspapers and manuscripts from different stages of his life.
