Argentina
Sample local history and culture at this important pilgrimage site.
Riverbound San Pedro de Colalao isn’t on any tourist maps, but this small settlement is a great way to quickly connect with contemporary, colonial, and indigenous Argentinian culture. The Gruta de Lordes, is a replica of the Our Lady of Lourdes grotto in France. And one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the province. Every February, thousands of devotees descend on the grotto to watch a reenactment of the Miracle of Our Lady of Lourdes. Overlooking the central Leocadio Paz Square, the late 19th century Iglesia de San Pedro is a surprising treat for anyone interested in religious art, with some artifacts dating back over 300 years. A block away, the small Museo Hualinchay offers a crash course on indigenous culture through displays and artifacts. Finally, if you’re up for a hike (about 1.5 hours each way), the “painted rock” is covered with petroglyphs and is considered one of the most important archaeological artifacts in the region.
