Standing atop a WWII POW camp, this peaceful park is a sobering reminder of the atrocities British and Australian prisoners faced here.
The Sandakan Memorial Park might be a beautiful rainforest garden, but during World War II, it was one of the most horrific POW camps. Considered the greatest atrocity faced by Australian troops during the war, of the nearly 2,500 troops imprisoned here, the only survivors were 6 Australian escapees. While walking through the beautifully landscaped park, you’ll pass a few rusting machines that are the only physical remains of the camp. A pavilion and small museum with photographs and survivor accounts sheds light on horrors faced by prisoners of the camp and its infamous death marches.
