It might not have been comfortable, but this network of rooms and tunnels provided a safe place to flee to during attacks.
The Saratli Underground City was created during the Byzantine era, and protected locals during major events like the Crusades and Arab raids. Spread out over 7 stories, the underground city is made up of 40 rooms, with everything from a wine cellar, to barn, living quarters, and kitchen, as well as a toilet, bath, and well, all of which are linked by an ingenious ventilation system. Steep stairs and tight places mean this stop isn’t recommended for those with mobility issues or suffer from claustrophobia.
