Schonbrunn Palace

The Habsburg’s spared no expense in making their summer palace as magnificent as imaginable, with thousands of rooms and a vast garden.

About

Beginning as a humble royal hunting lodge in the 16th century, Schönbrunn grew into one of the most resplendent palaces in all of Europe. Maria Theresa remodeled it to its present form after receiving the estate as a wedding gift. The neo-classical facade seen today comes courtesy of redecoration commissioned by Franz I. It’s been a museum since the fall of the Habsburg monarchy in 1918. Visitors can tour the 1,441 room palace to get a glimpse into the life of one of Europe’s greatest empires, or spend the day in the sprawling gardens. Stretching for over a kilometer, the gardens are an attraction in themselves, housing a maze, vineyard, zoo, and even faux Roman ruins. Be sure to take the time to go to the massive hilltop gloriette, which provides the best view of the gardens and palace, with Vienna in the background.
