Seosaengpo Japanese Fortress

This fortress stands as a prime example of the Japanese-style stone fortresses prevalent during the latter part of the 16th century.

About

Seosaengpo Japanese Fortress was erected under the leadership of Japanese General Kato Kiyomasa in 1592-1593 at the outset of the Imjinwaeran War. Situated on a mountaintop soaring 200 meters above sea level, the fortress encompasses three levels—an upper fortress atop the mountain, a middle fortress halfway down, and a lower fortress at the mountain’s base. Today, Seosaengpo Waeseong Fortress remains a tangible link to history, offering visitors a chance to explore the ruins of an authentic 16th-century Japanese fortress. Accessible via a picturesque trek from Jinha Beach, the site provides an opportunity to immerse oneself in history while enjoying the stunning surroundings. While signage may be predominantly in Korean, the allure of this well-preserved relic draws visitors seeking to connect with the past and appreciate the strategic importance of this historical structure.
