Stripped of its noble status by the Soviets, this beautiful astronomy-inspired palace and its lovely landscape park are now a sanitarium.
Built as a hunting lodge by the Counts of Schoenborn in the 17th century, and then renovated into a Romanticist palace in 1890, Shenbornov Castle lost its noble mystique in the 20th century when it was seized by the state. Today, the castle is used as a sanitarium specializing in treating cardiovascular diseases - one that invites visitors to appreciate its beautiful architecture. This Gothic-influenced ‘astronomical structure’ has 365 windows, 52 rooms, and 12 entrances, representing the days, weeks, and months of the year. The surrounding park, with was once part of one of the largest private properties in Europe, is a picturesque place to enjoy the eclectic mix of beeches, spruces, sakuras, and other rare trees.
