Steeped in history, Belur served as the capital of the Hoysalas, and this temple is a testament to their unparalleled craftsmanship.
Nestled on the banks of the picturesque Yagachi River, Belur unveils its timeless treasure – the Chennakeshava Swami Temple. Commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 AD to commemorate his triumph over the Cholas, the Chennakeshava temple stands as an epitome of Hoysala artistry. Carved from soft soapstone, the temple reveals intricate carvings and fine workmanship, showcasing over 80 Madanika sculptures depicting various activities. The lower frieze features charging elephants and horses, symbolizing courage and speed. The temple is surrounded by a Prakara with a Vijayanagar-style Gopura, making it look like a colossal casket. Inside, the craftsmanship reaches new heights with lathe-turned pillars, the Narasimha Pillar designed to rotate, and the Mohini Pillar hailed as a masterpiece. The sanctum houses a magnificent 3.7-meter-tall black stone idol of Lord Vijaya Narayana, surrounded by zigzag walls creating a play of light on the 24 forms of Lord Vishnu.
