This beautiful, ruined, UNESCO-listed city was once home to the first princes of Siam.
The Si Satchanalai Historical Park covers the remains of the city of Si Satchanalai, the second largest metropolis of the Sukhothai kingdom, and home to the crown prince. Founded in the 13th century, Si Satchanalai’s strategic location kept it relevant until it was destroyed by the Burmese in the 18th century. Visitors’ first stop should be Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat, which is just outside the Historical Park. Still active and under Royal patronage, this 13th century temple has a fantastic mixture of Buddhist and Hindu images, and architectural styles. Within the lush park proper, Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo is unique for its 32 stupas in a variety of sizes and styles, including Bagan and Sri Lankan elements, and its huge temple which was built as the ruling family’s burial place. Wat Chang Lom, the next temple over, is centered around a large 2-tiered chedi - the 1st with 39 elephants, the 2nd with 20 Buddha-filled niches.
