The Greek community of this cute little village lived in harmony with the Turks for 800 years thanks to a miracle.
In the 13th century, the renowned poet and mystic Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi was visiting Sille when he witnessed a miracle at the nearby Orthodox monastery of Saint Chariton. After spreading the word of the miracle, the village received protection from the Turkish sultans, which was honored even during the tensions of the 20th century. As such, Cappadocian Greek was spoken here until the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1922. Today, the charming little town with its cobbled alleys and wooden-beamed houses still honors its Orthodox heritage by preserving its two Byzantine churches. At the recently-restored St. Helena's, you can admire colorful frescoes, while Küçük Kilise is now a museum dedicated to timepieces. Behind the village, you’ll find a ridge dotted with ancient cave dwellings.
