Once the seat of Dutch power, Bali’s second largest settlement is one of the only places to see Colonial, Chinese, and Islamic influences.
Singaraja was the Dutch colonial capital of Bali, and remains a key administrative center to this day. Singaraja’s wide treelined streets still have a distinctively colonial feel to them, and the city is one of the few places in Bali where you can still find traces of Dutch rule, as well as Chinese and Islamic influences. At the 17th century Puri Singaraja Royal Palace, you can admire beautiful Balinese art and architecture on a guided tour while learning about the royal family (who still live there). Another relic from the city’s rich past is the Ling Gwan Kiong Chinese Buddhist temples, a colorful ensemble from 1873 that’s still in use today. It’s also worth strolling through the surrounding seaport area where you’ll find historic warehouses and plenty of places to stop for some local food.
