Costa Rica
These strange, near-perfect spheres are one of the few reminders of a culture that disappeared after the arrival of Europeans.
Site Museum Farm 6 is home to one of the densest collections of Costa Rica’s mysterious stone spheres - around 300 of which dot the country. Archaeologists know that the spheres date from between 300BC to 1500CE, and are remnants of the Disquis culture, which disappeared shortly after the arrival of the conquistadors in the 16th century. Scientists, however, have yet to determine their purpose, or even how the Disquis managed to make these unusually perfect spheres. A series of walking trails allow you to enjoy Costa Rica’s nature while you ponder these mysterious relics. In the small museum, you’ll find other small artefacts that have been unearthed there, and learn what scientists have managed uncover about the Disquis.
