Sweden
One of Sweden’s best-preserved Renaissance castles focuses its exhibitions on the lives of the women in its history.
Skarhult castle was built in the 1560s on an estate dating back to at least the 14th century, leaving historians to believe that some elements of the present castle may be medieval. After passing through several owners, including two kings, the castle was sold to Baron Carl Johan Gustav Adolf Julius von Schwerin and has remained in his family ever since. Schwerin and his descendants dedicated themselves to restoring the castle, and today, it’s one of the best-preserved of Renaissance castles in the country. The castle’s interior preserves centuries worth in elegant decor, with exhibits focusing on the oft-overlooked roles of women in history. While the castle itself is only open in the summer, the organic farm and shop on the grounds is open all year, allowing visitors to enjoy views of the elegant building while shopping for organic goods.
