Czech Republic

Slavonice

Filled with some of the oldest and finest Renaissance buildings in the Czech Republic, this little border-town is a historic delight.

About

Founded in the 13th century, this sleepy border town flourished during the Middle Ages when it sat on the route between Prague and Vienna. During the 14th century, Slavonice refined its urban design, creating two squares lined with houses and shops creating a convenient commerce center for its inhabitants. During the Renaissance, many facades were remodelled to incorporate frescoes and fine carvings, and are some of the oldest examples of the technique in the country. In Horní Square, several of the well-preserved buildings are open to the public. Along with the beautiful houses, Slavonice offers visitors some particularly unusual attractions. The first is a tour of the medieval tunnels that run under the town. The other is the Muzeum Samorostů, which is perhaps the world's most unusual museum, dedicated to unusually shaped wood found in the forest.
