The ruins of this mighty medieval fortress are still standing tall, and still wowing visitors with their imposing architecture.
First built in the 8th century, the powerful fortress underwent many adjustments and improvements in its long history. Ultimately, the citadel’s walls reached 12 meters high, and 4 meters thick. In the 17th century the church and many of the defenses were mostly destroyed. The locals attempted to repair their sanctuary, but were stopped by an outbreak of the plague. Today, the donjon, some of the walls, and the impressive Gothic imbricate arches offer visitors a glimpse at how large and imposing the fortress used to be. From the 12 meter high bell-tower, visitors are rewarded with the commanding views that made the hilltop such a strategic position. Inside the fortress, the caretaker’s family, along with his cat and menagerie of farm animals add a quaint charm to the place.
